What you are owed, by train type
The delay counts at the arrival station of your ticket. Percentages apply to the ticket price.
| Train | 30-59 min | 60-119 min | 120+ min |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca | 25% bonus | 25% | 50% |
| Intercity and Intercity Notte | - | 25% | 50% |
| Regionale and Regionale Veloce | - | 25% | 50% |
- The Frecce bonus (30-59 minutes) is a voucher for a new ticket within 12 months, not money.
- Compensation under 4 euros is not paid: at 25% you need a ticket of at least 16 euros, at 50% at least 8 euros.
- Regional trains (single and mixed global tickets): the 25% for 60 to 119 minutes applies only if the ticket costs at least 16 euros, the 50% from 120 minutes only if it costs at least 8 euros. There is no refund of the whole ticket for delay. Other cases and fares: full Trenitalia refund guide.
Calculate the amount
The calculation uses the published rules (sources at the bottom) and depends only on the three values you type.
How to claim
- Keep your ticket, the train number and the date. To check the delay you can use our refund assistant.
- Frecce and Intercity with a ticketless booking: web form or the "Richiedi Indennizzo" function on the Trenitalia site, app (not for Carnet, season tickets and Passes), Smart Refund or call center.
- Any ticket, paper included: ticket office or agency, or by post to Trenitalia S.p.A., Ufficio Reclami e Rimborsi, Piazza della Croce Rossa 1, 00161 Rome.
- Regional trains without automatic compensation: web or paper form, sent to the Regional or Provincial Directorate for the destination, with the original validated ticket.
- Claim within 1 year of the journey.
It is not always due: for example if you knew about the delay before buying the ticket, or the delay is your own doing. Trenitalia's conditions and the Regulation prevail.
