When you're entitled to a refund
EU Regulation 1371/2007 protects rail passengers. You are entitled to a refund in these cases:
- Delay over 60 minutes: 25% of ticket price
- Delay over 120 minutes: 50% of ticket price
- Cancellation: full refund or rebooking on another train

Automatic refunds (from 2025)
From January 2025, Trenitalia introduced automatic refunds for digital tickets:
- Tickets purchased on trenitalia.com, Trenitalia app or self-service machines
- The compensation is automatically credited within 30 days
- No request needed - the system automatically detects delays
Note: Automatic refund applies only to Frecce and Intercity trains. For regional trains, see the excluded regions section.
Manual procedure
For paper tickets or if you haven't received automatic refund, you can request manually:
- Online: Log in to trenitalia.com > Personal area > My trips > Request compensation
- App Trenitalia: 'My trips' section > Select trip > Request refund
- Ticket office: Present your ticket within 12 months of travel date
- PEC: Send request to rimborsi@trenitalia.it with ticket attached
Regions excluded from automatic refund
The following regions are currently excluded from the automatic refund system for regional trains:
- Campania
- Abruzzo
- Sardegna
- Puglia
- Trentino-Alto Adige
For these regions, you must submit a manual request through the channels indicated above.
Consequential damages (hotel, missed connections)
In addition to the ticket refund, you can request compensation for consequential damages:
- Hotel expenses: If you had to stay overnight due to the delay
- Taxi/alternative transport: Costs incurred to reach the destination
- Missed connections: Cost of new tickets for flights, trains or other means
Important: Keep all receipts and documents. The request must be made via certified email or formal complaint with attached documentation.
Deadlines and timeframes
- Request deadline: 12 months from date of travel
- Refund payment: Within 30 days of request (or automatic for digital tickets)
- Refund form: Trenitalia bonus (usable within 12 months) or cash refund on request
