Italy Sleeper Train Prices: Only One Cabin Has a Toilet

What a bed on an Italian night train actually costs

On 21 August 2026 we ran fourteen real ticket searches on Trenitalia's booking engine, across twelve overnight connections. This is what was on sale.

First, the two words that confuse everyone

Italian night trains sell two completely different things, and travellers book the wrong one all the time.

• A couchette (cuccetta) is a berth, not a room. You buy one bunk in a compartment of four, and the other three are strangers. Bedding comes sealed, there is a small travel kit and breakfast, and the toilet is down the corridor. It costs roughly twice a seat.
• A sleeper (vagone letto) is a whole cabin, made up as a proper bed, for one, two or three people who are travelling together. Nobody else comes in. It costs roughly twice a couchette.

The jump in price between them does not buy you a better mattress. It buys you a door that locks.

Does the cabin have a bathroom? Only one of them does

This is the question we get more than any other, and the answer has a catch.

• Vagone Letto Relax — your own cabin, beds made up, and a washbasin inside. The toilet is in the corridor.
• Superior — your own cabin with a private toilet and a shower cubicle inside.

That is the whole difference between the two, and Trenitalia says so in the service description itself: Superior lists "WC privato con lavabo, box doccia" (private toilet with basin, shower cubicle), Relax lists only a basin and a towel.

And what does the toilet cost? On the Trieste - Rome train of 15 September, single cabin:

€19.20. That is the entire distance between a washbasin and a shower.

The four ways to spend the night

The names below are the ones you will see at checkout. The descriptions are Trenitalia's own, read on 21 August 2026.

Posto a sedere Easy. A reclining seat in an open carriage, with power sockets and luggage space. No bed, no breakfast. It is the cheap way to sit through the night.

Cuccetta Comfort. One bunk in a four-berth compartment. There is also a women-only version at exactly the same price. Includes sealed bedding, a small travel kit, 125 ml of water and a light breakfast: juice, a sweet or savoury snack, a coffee.

Vagone Letto Relax. A cabin to yourself, or for two or three of you, with beds already made, a basin, towel, mirror, coat hooks, a call button for the attendant, a travel kit, half a litre of water, a newspaper and a fuller breakfast.

Superior. Everything in the Relax, plus the private toilet with shower, a travel pouch and a welcome drink.

The prices, route by route

Each table names the train, the departure date searched and the date of the search. If any of the three is missing, a price means nothing.

Milan Centrale - Lecce, Intercity Notte 35051

Searched 21/08/2026, one adult, one way. Milan to the heel of Italy, just over fourteen hours.

Look carefully at the two columns. The full fare is identical in both: €74.50, €107.20, €224.70, twice over. What changed is how many discounted places were left. In September the cheap sleeper fare was gone and only the full price remained; in November the same bed cost half.

This is the single most useful thing to understand about Italian night trains. There is no "book early and get 20% off" rule. There is a small pile of cheap places, and it empties.

Rome Termini - Syracuse, Intercity Notte 1959

Searched 21/08/2026, departing 15 September, one adult. Rome to Sicily, twelve and a half hours.

On the Sicily trains in our sample (1955, 1959, 1963) the seat did not appear at all: the cheapest thing on sale is a couchette. Budget accordingly if Sicily is the plan.

Trieste Centrale - Rome Termini, Intercity Notte 770

Searched 21/08/2026, departing 15 September, one adult. The only train in our sample with the ensuite cabin.

Two or three of you? The price is per cabin

This is where the real saving is, and almost nobody mentions it. Cabins are sold whole. The price does not double when there are two of you.

Trieste - Rome, train 770, 15 September, two adults, full fare:

For two people, the cabin with the private bathroom costs less than two cabins without one. €294.00 against €405.60.

The same logic holds for three. Turin - Salerno, train 899, 15 September, three adults, with discounted fares still available:

Closing the compartment so the three of you are not scattered among strangers cost €7.00 each.

What moves the price, in order of weight

1. Whether cheap places are left. Each accommodation has three fare levels: Super Economy and Economy, few and restricted, and BASE, expensive and changeable up to departure. The gap between the cheapest and the full fare is double the price, not ten per cent.
2. How early you book. Not because of an advance discount, but because the Super Economy places run out. On the September Milan - Lecce they were gone; on the November one they were not.
3. How long the journey is. Trieste - Rome (11h48) starts at €30.90; Milan - Palermo (20h45) starts at €82.90 for a couchette.
4. Which accommodation you pick. Seat to private cabin multiplies the price by five or six.
5. How many of you there are. In cabins the bill is per cabin, so the more of you, the less each pays.

Where the beds are not

• The Frecciarossa has no couchettes and no cabins. In our 21 August 2026 searches Frecciarossa trains sold seats only: Standard, Premium, Business, Executive. There is no Italian high-speed train you can lie down on.
• Couchettes and sleepers belong to the Intercity Notte, and only to it, on the long connections between the north and the south or the islands.
• Night trains to other countries (Vienna, Munich, Paris) are run by other companies, with other names and other prices. They are not on this page because we did not measure them.

What is deliberately missing here

We would rather have a stated gap than an invented number.

• No "average" sleeper price. Between €112.90 and €240.40, an average describes nothing and would be read as a price list.
• No child fares, loyalty cards or limited-time promotions. We did not search them, so we do not quote them.
• No bicycle prices on night trains: they did not appear in the searches we ran.
• No prices in dollars, pounds or anything else. We saw euros, so we publish euros. A converted figure would be a guess with a decimal point.
• No "cheaper than a hotel" claim. We do not have hotel prices, so we cannot say it.
• No comparison with flying. Same reason.

How we collected these prices

• Source: Trenitalia's own ticket-selling engine, the one that answers when you search a fare on lefrecce.it. Not estimates, not figures copied from other guides.
• Date of collection: 21 August 2026, every search.
• Departures searched: 15 September 2026 and 10 November 2026.
• Search settings: one way, no changes, standard adult fare, no railcard.
• Fourteen searches over twelve connections, one to three passengers.
• Where we write "€X to €Y", X is the cheapest fare still buyable at that moment and Y is the full BASE fare.

If you are reading this more than six months after that date, treat the figures as an order of magnitude and search your own train. The method still holds; the numbers will not.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a sleeper cabin on an Italian night train?

In our 21 August 2026 searches a single Vagone Letto Relax cabin ranged from €112.90 (discounted fare, Milan - Lecce in November) to €240.40 (full fare, Milan - Palermo). The Superior cabin with a private bathroom was €222.00 on Trieste - Rome.

How much is a couchette on the Intercity Notte?

From €54.90 where discounted fares were still available to €116.90 at full fare, depending on route and train. The price includes sealed bedding, a travel kit, water and a light breakfast.

Do Italian sleeper cabins have a private bathroom?

Only the Superior, which has a private toilet and a shower cubicle. The Vagone Letto Relax has a washbasin in the cabin but the toilet is in the corridor. In our sample the Superior was on sale only on the Trieste - Rome trains.

What is the difference between a couchette and a sleeper?

A couchette is one bunk in a shared four-berth compartment, with strangers. A sleeper is a whole private cabin with beds made up, for you or your group. The sleeper costs roughly twice as much.

Is it cheaper to book a double cabin for two?

Yes. Cabins are priced per cabin, not per person. On Trieste - Rome, a Relax Double was €277.60 for two (€138.80 each), while two separate single cabins came to €405.60.

Can you sleep lying down on a Frecciarossa?

No. The Frecciarossa sells seats only (Standard, Premium, Business, Executive). For a bed you need the Intercity Notte.

Is there a women-only couchette?

Yes, the four-berth Cuccetta Comfort in a women-only version, and in our searches it cost exactly the same as the mixed one.

Does booking early make it cheaper?

Yes, but not through an automatic discount: the Super Economy places are few and they sell out. On the same train, the same cabin cost €112.90 in November and €224.70 in September, purely because September's cheap fares were gone.
