Your rights in case of delay

EU Regulation 1371/2007 protects rail passengers. If your train arrives with a significant delay, you're entitled to a partial refund.

Frecce (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca)

  • 30-59 minute delay: 25% of ticket price (bonus)
  • 60-119 minute delay: 25% of ticket price
  • 120+ minute delay: 50% of ticket price

Intercity and Intercity Notte

  • 60-119 minute delay: 25% of ticket price
  • 120+ minute delay: 50% of ticket price

Regional trains

  • 60+ minute delay: Full refund (on request)

Italo refund table

  • 60-119 minute delay: 25% of ticket price (Italo credit)
  • 120+ minute delay: 50% of ticket price (Italo credit)
  • 180+ minute delay: 100% of ticket price

How to claim Trenitalia refund

1. Online: Log into trenitalia.com personal area

2. Trenitalia App: "My trips" section > select journey > Request compensation

3. Ticket office: Present your ticket within 12 months of travel

4. Paper form: Fill out the form available at the station

Timeframe: Request must be made within 12 months. Refund issued within 30 days.

How to claim Italo refund

1. Online: Log into italotreno.it > Reserved area > My trips

2. Italo Treno App: Trips section > Request refund

3. Call center: 892020 (paid service)

Timeframe: Request within 12 months. Credit issued within 30 days.

What to do if your train is cancelled

In case of cancellation you're entitled to:

  • Full refund: of unused ticket
  • Re-routing: on another train at no extra cost
  • Assistance: meals and refreshments if wait exceeds 60 minutes
  • Accommodation: if journey cannot be completed the same day

How to document the delay
